"Devils in baggy pants" refers to the nickname for the U.S. Army's 504th Parachute Infantry Regiment (PIR) of the 82nd Airborne Division, earned during the intense fighting at the Anzio beachhead in Italy during World War II. The name came from a diary written by a German officer who described the paratroopers as "devils in baggy pants" because they would appear unexpectedly and strike from nowhere, a reference to the oversized uniforms worn by the paratroopers.
